{"id":861,"date":"2012-10-24T07:47:00","date_gmt":"2012-10-24T11:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/?p=861"},"modified":"2022-07-01T14:11:51","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T18:11:51","slug":"warehouse-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/2012\/10\/warehouse-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Warehouse 13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/title.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-867\" title=\"title\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/title.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/title.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/title-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a>Recently I watched the first three seasons of the Syfy Channel&#8217;s <em>Warehouse 13<\/em>. \u00a0The upshot is that it&#8217;s fun and entertaining, but not necessarily something that will age very well or be particularly remembered.<\/p>\n<p>There are two obvious shows to reference against: <em>Bones<\/em> and, of course, <em>The\u00a0X-Files<\/em>. \u00a0In general the show seems aimed at a slightly younger audience than both. \u00a0It&#8217;s not nearly as dark and serious as\u00a0<em>X-Files<\/em>\u00a0mostly was. \u00a0With the exception of a few weird jokes late in the third season that stick out quite a bit, <em>Warehouse<\/em> also generally doesn&#8217;t have the occasional adult humor and mainstreamed stylish sexyness\u00a0<em>Bones<\/em>\u00a0tries to peddle at times.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s kind of funny to watch some of the forced comparisons with <em>Bones<\/em> in the first couple episodes. \u00a0Pete, the lead male character, comes across an awful lot like an even goofier Booth. \u00a0They even look extremely similar. \u00a0The tone is similar to <em>Bones<\/em> but without all the blood and unnecessary gross bits. \u00a0However, somewhat counter-intuitively, I actually find <em>Warehouse<\/em> a lot more coherent. \u00a0<em>Bones<\/em> to me never manages to strike a consistent tone between fantastical goofyness and serious crime drama. \u00a0By being rooted in precisely that fantastical goofyness, <em>Warehouse<\/em> actually works better around the viewers&#8217; suspension of disbelief than <em>Bones<\/em> and a lot of high faux-science procedurals.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_868\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/warehouse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-868\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-868\" title=\"warehouse\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/warehouse-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/warehouse-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/warehouse.jpg 330w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The production pitch is super obvious: Take the last scene from Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark, and build a whole show around it. Dunnnzo!<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_866\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/suits.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-866\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-866\" title=\"suits\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/suits-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/suits-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/suits.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cue the Bond theme!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately, I would say that\u00a0<em>Warehouse<\/em>\u00a0fairly quickly falls into the same trap that <em>The\u00a0X-Files<\/em> continually danced around as it went forward, and eventually more or less fell into: Over-emphasis on long term story arc episodes at the cost of lighter, more fun and comprehensible one-shots. \u00a0My impression of <em>Warehouse<\/em>\u00a0after the second season was actually fairly high. \u00a0Definitely a light show, but fun and going somewhere. \u00a0That momentum however really got dragged down in the third season by a steady stream of new characters, unnecessary webs of character relationships and family backgrounds, and an increasingly byzantine overarching story arc&#8212;all the same problems of complexity and weight that really plagued <em>X-Files<\/em>, though admittedly its true strength was the long-term development and complexity of the relationship between Mulder and Scully. \u00a0It&#8217;s a delicate line. \u00a0<em>Warehouse<\/em> has a good start on building up a bunch of interesting relationships, but I think launched the plot into the deep end a bit early.<\/p>\n<p>On the upside, the show features a good number of solid female characters. \u00a0Myka, the female lead, is a bit stereotypical: The organized, controlled and controlling one who&#8217;s always just on the edge of emotionally cracking. \u00a0Otherwise though they&#8217;re pretty good. \u00a0Claudia is the most technologically savvy character on the show. \u00a0Mrs Frederick is both the consummate boss and fount of wisdom. \u00a0H.G. (Helena) Wells is a convincing and interesting super villain, and an interesting spin on a historical science fiction touchstone. \u00a0Leena&#8217;s new age trippyness I don&#8217;t find particularly compelling but the character&#8217;s not terrible when not being used for boob jokes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_865\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/running.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-865\" class=\"size-full wp-image-865\" title=\"running\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/running.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/running.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/running-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-865\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ooohmygod, they&#8217;ve got cookies! Cookies!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As an interesting design point, through the first season and a quarter or so the show has a somewhat unusual triple plot structure. \u00a0Most TV shows, especially those with an hour long format, run an A plot and a B sub-plot. \u00a0Until it settles down a bit in the second season, <em>Warehouse<\/em> often runs an A, B, and C sub-plot, where the A line is about the artifact <em>du jour<\/em>, the B line about some personal matter or relationship development among Myka and Pete, and the C line some near catastrophe in the warehouse occupying Artie (their boss) and Claudia. \u00a0These C plots are actually not too annoying and it&#8217;s an interesting way to build up the office and tech oriented Artie and Claudia characters before they become more mobile and active in the main plotlines.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_864\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/helena.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-864\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-864\" title=\"helena\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/helena-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/helena-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/helena.jpg 590w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Look, don&#8217;t mess with me, I&#8217;m having a bad century.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For what it&#8217;s worth, Warehouse is set in the same Syfy universe as <em>Eureka<\/em> (which I haven&#8217;t seen) and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/2012\/09\/alphas\/\">Alphas<\/a><\/em>, which I&#8217;ve found pretty decent so far. \u00a0The tie-ins with <em>Eureka<\/em> are overt, with characters, gadgets, and companies appearing in both. \u00a0Connections with\u00a0<em>Alphas<\/em> are a lot more implicit at the moment. \u00a0For example, <em>Warehouse<\/em>&#8216;s third season character Steve is clearly some kind of Alpha though never explicitly labelled as such, and I would argue Claudia and several other characters show Alpha tendencies as well. \u00a0It&#8217;s a little fun trying to gauge which of <em>Warehouse<\/em> or <em>Alphas<\/em> has more budget. \u00a0I would guess <em>Warehouse<\/em>, given that it has a lot more setting variety, more gizmos, and actually a fair number of recognizable sci-fi actors. \u00a0However, I think <em>Alphas<\/em> is a lot more slick, the relatively more subtle and serious tone of the special effects making them seem more polished. \u00a0More importantly, the themes in <em>Alphas<\/em> seem a good bit more mature and deeper.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_863\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/frederic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-863\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-863\" title=\"frederic\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/frederic-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/frederic-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/frederic.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Really? I will destroy you, and not even notice.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_862\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/claudia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-862\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-862\" title=\"claudia\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/claudia-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/claudia-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipgames.com\/blogs\/tjkopena\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/claudia.jpg 495w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Listen, just because I was thown in here to compromise between being not-quite jailbait for all the sci-fi dudes, but still young and goofy enough for all the teenage dudettes to relate to, doesn&#8217;t mean I can&#8217;t kick your ass. Ohmygod, I&#8217;m, like, so screwed up, you know?!&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Overall though, <em>Warehouse 13<\/em> is a reasonably solid, warmhearted and goofy little science fiction show. \u00a0It&#8217;s probably a bit light for anyone besides teenagers\/young adults to really really dig into, but not so much as to be offputting or especially boring. \u00a0It&#8217;s also fairly obvious in nature and execution, and thus easy to have on in the background or to pick up off and on. \u00a0So, I recommend it for fans of the genre looking for some digested entertainment, just don&#8217;t expect too too much.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Artie, the lead agent, is from Philadelphia&#8230; and a curmudgeon. \u00a0Bonus points for realism!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I watched the first three seasons of the Syfy Channel&#8217;s Warehouse 13. \u00a0The upshot is that it&#8217;s fun and entertaining, but not necessarily something that will age very well or be particularly remembered.
